I am hearing impaired and I told my daughter they have CC devices at the theater. (we were planning on seeing Joker) She flipped her sh*t when I asked the theater about their CC devices. I guess she thought I was lying...😒 By the way - Joker was very good!

Well, I'm deaf and I use an apparatus to listen, but unfortunately I can't understand anything in the movie without subtitles/captions, because there's so many reasons, but the principal one is that in the movie they speak so freaking fast or that there's some scenes that there's no actors speaking directly, a very common example is when one actor is in the middle of call... but whatever... I live in Mexico and in the movie theater's in Mexico when the movie are foreigner they always show the "open captions" to understand which I'm very grateful, but... soon I'm moving to Canada and I figured that it doesn't exists movie theaters with "open captions" which it make me feel sad and disappointed because I like a lot to watch movies... so this means that I need to wait months of months to be released online or just in popcorn4time to watch it... in my home with TV small screen... which it baffles me because we're in 2019 and they doesn't offer a movie with "open captions" even the movies are in English... it doesn't MATTEEERRRR !!!! Maybe we're a minority of deaf people but we have all the rights to watch a movie and to enjoy it... not to just been waiting since the release date in the movie theaters to watch online... so yeah... this sucks a lot and it's sad...

If you are so proud of being "deaf" or whatever, and you're obviously capitalizing it, why don't you actually sign? "ESL" or "ASL" I care not, but it seems you don't sign. It's clear to me it's not your natural language.

I don't always like captions on my movies and shows. Sometimes it's really frustrating to see what people are saying before they're saying it. Obviously this could be fixed by them synching up the captions better. But frankly, if there can be two showings with and without 3D, can we not provide most showings with open captions and some without?

I hand type closed captions so they're actually accurate- And always have them as an option, mostly because open captions doesn't work for my videos. But I love open captions and if they're an option, I use them, cause as a hearing person, because I will process my visual ques faster than my audio, so I'll process reading words rather than hearing them.

Captions in general have come a looong way over the last 10-15 years. I remember watching the news and all the retractions and corrections constantly spewing on the screen. Awful! It's bad enough not hear at all, but to get your brain to follow along with all the corrections...shoot me now please! Unfortunately when it comes to theatres most smaller towns do not offer devices, but in my experience the glasses provided the best experience. The still have a little ways to go but accommodations are getting better in general. Awesome personality, I enjoy the video you make. :)

This is such a great video!! Im a person with ADD and a lot of the time because of my cognition: visual stim is easier for me to process and most of the time my brain cant focus on audio in a way that allows me to absorb things fully. I have ADD/ADHD too. Sometimes captions help, sometimes they interfere. Particularly during heavy action scenes, I don't like them. I would like to have a choice to not have them, but I'm ok with having to, say go to a specific time, to avoid it in those situations.

I had such a hard time watching Black Panther! I had the caption machine positioned and was doing fine, but then they used open captions on the screen when the characters were speaking another language, but they didn't display that on the caption machine, so I had to keep leaning around the machine read the open captions and then back to read the closed captions. I tried to move the box down but it wouldn't go any lower without falling out of the cup holder. The machines at my local theater are so much better than they used to be, but gosh that was a tough movie to follow. I don't understand why so many hearing people get so upset about captions. It seems like such a small "inconvenience" to allow access for so many people.

Heh, on top of the worse captiview problems, my mom also complains about the fact they take away her cup holder. (But she likes them over the assistive listening headphones she was using before she realized the theater was keeping the captioning device secret from her, because they often had interference/static problems and at one point even managed to play audio from the wrong movie, despite theoretically being tuned to the right frequency.)

It seems like the Deaf community needs to create their own theaters and re-invent the movie experience. Use whatever caption system works best, and any employee that neglects the captions or other adaptive technology with not just be fired, but contractually required to commit seppiku to atone for their failure!

Exactly!! Yeah the helpful descriptions of how the person sounds are great. Sobbing is technically a sound, though, so it technically makes sense to caption. I think A J was probably talking about "shook" in the same sense that some people caption something like "[youtuber stares blankly and blinks a few times haha lol shook]" (or "OMG IS THAT PEARL?!" (...I wish someone would just finally approve my six-month-old edit to that video's captions already, because I'm so bothered about that one DX))

Those things are the WORST! I would prefer OC over any captions any time in theaters, but my second choice would be the glasses. Yes, they're bulky and irritating, but for some reason, they seem to work better than the CaptiView devices, and they block way less of the screen (re: none of it).

Subtitling a movie can't be that difficult. English language movies are subtitled into other languages for foreign language audiences all the time. Years ago, when I was stationed in Iceland I watched all kinds of American movies subtitled in Icelandic. Regular, on the screen for everyone to read, subtitles. So it can be done, just isn't.
