History Channel - WWII in HD: The Air War

In November 2010, History aired WWII in HD: The Air War, focusing on the Eighth Air Force's strategic campaign against the German Luftwaffe in the months leading up to D-Day. The special, using never-before-seen 8mm color footage, centers on the firsthand experiences of B-17 bombardier Joe Armanini (Casey Affleck), P-47 fighter pilot Steve Pisanos (Sean Astin), B-17 pilot John Gibbons (Chris O'Donnell), and Stars and Stripes correspondent Andy Rooney (Elijah Wood). Rob Lowe narrated the program that was produced by Lou Reda Productions.

Oh how the people of this country have forgotten the values these men faught to protect. The world we live in would definitely be a lot darker without their service. Our own government is the very betrayal of it. Our own people crave socialism which is what so many died to prevent. An embarrassment indeed and so saddening.

my dad went to England in the early days of 1943. he was 20 years old. he was a right waste gunner on a B24 Liberator with the 458th bomb group. he completed 25 missions and came home just after the war ended. he never said a word to me. however, he had a ton of pictures of battle damage and only spoke to me when I came back from the big puddle in 1972. I know he had PTSD because how could he not. 35,000 feet and 50 below outside of his bird you would freeze your ass off. we shared a lot of tears when we alone. God bless the greatest generation for the hell they went thru to keep us save. I love you and miss you so much dad.

I'm fully aware here in the West that the P51 was the darling of air to air combat but if I had to fight my way to a target and fight my way back, my horse would be the the P47 Thunderbolt, no conversation, no way any other. The "JUG" would be my horse.

My grandma was a nurse in the Army during WWII. Before she passed away she left me her diary that she kept during her time in the war. I transcribed it and self-published it so I can give it to my family for Christmas this year. It was really cool to hear the war from a woman's perspective. It's available on Amazon if you're interested. Just a great way to honor her memory. www.amazon.com/Life-Love-War-Lieutenant-grandmother/dp/1695142055/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=life%2C+love+and+war&qid=1576601969&sr=8-2

We're told 'the air war' against the Germans began after Pearl Harbour. WOT THE FUK. And immediately after, we're told that 28,000 Eighth Airforce men died in the battle. Actually the air war against Germany began in 1940 with the Battle of Britain - long before the US was forced into the war when Hitler declared war on it. And for the record, 55,000 British bomber crew were lost, and approx 5000 British fighter pilots, in the air war over Germany. This American video, like so many about WWII, seems oblivious to anything that didn't involve Americans. The USA only entered Europe in large numbers on D-Day - year FIVE of a SIX year war. Overall, the USA did only 5% of the fighting and dying in the war against Germany. Just for the record.

This video is a Progressive Communist Propaganda fake-umentory. It's portrayed as if we were just throwing lives away. These men fought with a reason and a purpose. The history channel has become a Propaganda outlet. In this film they claim the United state center bombers as decoys to draw up enemy fighters. Then why did they have bombs in their Bombay's. Don't listen to this s*** it's just to demoralize young American men from joining the military thinking their government will abandon them. Progressives want our country weak in the history channel is part of this.

A great documentary. What sacrifices they made to battle fascism and tyranny in our modern world. If only our country could see the same tyranny that Trump presents to our republic. My father fought in the air war in WWII. May he and his compatriots see an end to what Trump and his Putin allies bring to our shores today, less they spin forever in their graves. The republican apologists and enablers must be defeated in 2020.

All the comments are how brave the American b17 crews were. They were sent to bomb targets, in which innocent civilians were going to die The German fighter pilots job was to prevent these bombers from reaching their targets, and minimise civil casualties. In the process, American and British bombers were shot down. When a bomber dies so does its crew. The same way when a bomber drops its load, people will die. Perhaps you might like to think about the people on the receiving end of these bombs. That the German fighter pilots were able to shoot down so many of them, perhaps is a credit to the pilots of the Luftwaffe. Unfortunately, history is written by the victors. The story of the vanquished is always lost. In the air everyone is a predator. The bombers only wish to destroy what is in there sights. regardless of cost. The fighters to kill those who wish to stop them. War does not decided who is right. War decides who is left!

So it seems both British and Germans committed war crimes in WWII. I would argue the German's crimes were worse, but the British directly bombing civilian areas for the purpose of killing civilians (rather than for just destroying infrastructure and civilians being merely collateral damage) is clearly a war crime.

My God is all I can say. When I think about the courage and bravery of everyone who has died for this country since we fought for our Independence nearly 250 years ago I wish I could do something other than give them all the honor and respect I can muster. And in fact, not just America but the sacrifices of the British, the French, the Chinese and many other Allied nations. Even the sacrifices of those soldiers on the Axis' side who were forced to follow their orders should be respected. I've had family fight in wars since the Revolutionary War up until WW2 and have read stories of my ancestors from each of them. My grandfather, although he served in the years just after WW2, passed away last year and my greatest regret in life is how I didn't spend enough time with him to hear his stories and the stories of those he had learned. And nothing can ever bring that back. I only have a small amount of footage I obtained during my final trip to see him and it pains me to think of everything I could have done. A lesson I have learned the hard way to never take for granted what you have... I also feel like I have to apologize to these brave men for the actions of today's society. I feel nothing but the greatest of shame when I think about what they fought and died for when I see some of today's generation, though obviously not all. Our lives today in America and Europe were built on the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought and died for our freedom over the centuries, and in some nations millenia, but so many people forget. So many don't even care. So many belittle these sacrifices. I've listened to people who think they are more courageous and brave than the soldiers who fought in WW2 because of some petty reason and it fills me with a disgust that I cannot put into words. I've listened to children say they no literally nothing about WW2, let alone Korea, Vietnam or the 1st Iraq war because the schools didn't teach it.

The Air War over Germany consumed as much of Germany's finite resources and manpower as a Second Front. In addition to the resources destroyed by the bombers, HUGE resources and manpower were committed to stopping them. First, we have the obvious resources committed to the Luftwaffe, aircraft production, pilots and support staff. Then there's Flak. Over 144,000 Flak 38s were made, and over 22,000 Flak 88s alone were produced. All of these guns required resources and production facilities and workers to produce. Around 1.5 million to 2 million people were required to man these weapons. Add additional drain of manpower and resources committed to production of aircraft, flak guns, and the huge quantities of ammunition required to keep them running. None of these guns, people, and resources committed to aircraft and Flak duty were available for ground combat. Imagine, for example, the additional impact of all 22, 000 Flak 88s being committed to the Front as antitank weapons. Remember that Operation Barbarossa was launched with just over 3 million soldiers . In effect, especially from 1943 on, the Air war served as a "Second Front" in the huge amount of manpower and material resources diverted from the Eastern Front alone. The impact of this part of the war is generally greatly underestimated by most historians.
